At a time when we are witnessing a proliferation of the world’s pasts and presents, collective memory has taken the driving seat compared to the modernist-inspired history we were accustomed to. Today, laying claim to one’s own archives or one’s right to memory has taken centre-stage in various parts of the world. Proposing a dialogue between two artists with starkly different profiles, starting from the shared idea of deconstructing monuments and historical narratives, seemed to us a necessary – if not indeed an obligatory – step. While the German artist Jankowski is well known internationally for his satirical work Heavy Weight History on the lifting of monuments in Warsaw, the Tunisian artist Chamekh has made a name for himself with his fragmented plaster casts of Roman imperial sculptures from the days of the destruction of Carthage. Hence, both artists’ complex work on memory and its representation lies at the heart of the exhibition Controstorie.
